Updates on Quilts

I realized it had been a long time since I had posted any of my recent quilts, so thought this would be a good time to do a recap.

This was a t-shirt quilt I made for my niece Michelle.

Just a fun one for us with some traveling fabric.

Lucy, our dog, checking out this one.

This was a Thimbleberries kit I bought at a quilt store in Lebanon.  It took a while to finish.

Thimbleberries

Lucy likes to get in my pictures.  This one is a space ship quilt.  It was fun fabric.

I love this one, it's for Kasey's bed, The name of it is Hanky Panky, but it's got a bunch of different fabric, so could be an Eye Spy Quilt really easy.

When Nicky was in high school, she wanted to make a quilt.  She started on this one and never finished it.  I sewed the border on for her, quilted it on my machine and then gave it to her for Christmas.

This is a t-shirt quilt I made for my nephew Connor.

This was a disappearing 9 patch.  I love the fabric in it, it's a Christmas material.

This quilt took a long time to finish too.  I tend to like to do really easy quilts, but every once in a while I throw something in that's a little more complex to give me a challenge.  I think this was a quilt that I got off the Internet, like a block of the month, possibly from this website.

burning the midnight oil quilt

This was a monthly block of the month that I did with my friend Barbara several years ago.  I did all the blocks, but didn't put them together in a quilt.  I decided to take these blocks and put them together in a table topper.

I wasn't too happy with how this one turned out, it was just too busy.  I put a nice warm flannel backing on it so it's nice and snuggly.

baseball quilt

This quilt is one that I made with the leftover fabric from Nicky's bed quilt, you can view here.   I was really happy with how it turned out, I like the green around the borders.  I was happy that I used what I had leftover and could get a nice lap quilt out of the fabric.

2 More Quilts Done

This was a quilt I made with the leftovers from the Jelly Roll Quilt, I’m going to give it to Mark’s Nanny.  She’s in her 90’s and is in a wheelchair.  It is just the right size to put over her legs.

CIMG5890

This quilt I made for Mark’s mom.  I made is 3 or 4 years ago and at the time I thought it would go well with her couch.

CIMG5887

I made labels for the back of all the quilts.  You can tell it on the Jelly Roll Quilt, they are all like that.

Kasey loves to get in the picture.  He dressed himself this afternoon and put his jeans on backwards.  I didn’t both to fix it.

Camper Quilt

Here’s a quilt that I finished recently.  I put minkee fabric on the back of it, it’s really soft and cuddly and everyone fights over it in the camper.  Kasey likes to get in the picture anytime I take a picture of one of my quilts.

Jelly Roll Quilt a Long Block #3

Here is my third block in the Jelly Roll Quilt a Long by Moose on the Porch. The Jelly Roll I used is called La’mour by Moda. I am happy with how it turned out! This has been such a fun project. I created a label for Jelly Roll Quilt so that you can click on the label to see all of them that I have complete.

Every other Monday there is a new Jelly Roll Quilt a Long block.  I finally got #2 done, #3 comes out this Monday, so I was just in time.  I love how this one turned out!

Jelly Roll Quilt a Long

Here is my first block in the Jelly Roll Quilt a Long by Moose on the Porch.  The Jelly Roll I used is called La’mour by Moda.  I am not 100% happy with the inside blocks.  I may redo it, haven’t decided yet.  I really wished I had put all red in the squares, or maybe put a brown in the center and all red on the outside.  Sometimes you just have to let things go though and move on.  I really love this fabric line though.

CIMG3923

Kasey and I have been working on recycling.  I have been recycling papers for a while.  I bought one of those Aldi’s recycle bags and just throw my papers in it, then I can pick it up and take it to the big recycle dumpster.  I have been shocked at the amount of paper we generate.  One thing I really like about it is that if I need to retrieve something that I previously would have thrown away, it’s right there in the recycle.  I received a check the other day from our flexible spending account vendor and then couldn’t find it.  I looked all over and then decided to look in recycle and there it was!  I think that Kasey thought it was recycle so threw it in there.

After the paper, I thought it would be a good idea to recycle soda cans.  We buy too much soda and I decided it was time to recycle those too.  So I searched all over town and finally found a can crusher.  This is now Kasey’s job and he really likes it.  My mom has been saving her cans up too for him to crush.  Here’s Kasey crushing the cans.

CIMG3925

CIMG3924Then he puts them in this little trash can.

CIMG3926That’s all for tonight!  We’re having a really nice thunder rainstorm tonight.  I love it when it rains, sounds so relaxing (well, except for the loud thunder and the crashing lightening.)

Another Quilt Done!

I started this quilt a long time ago.  I had it on the quilt machine but had problems with the machine breaking my thread.  So Mark took a look at it this weekend and the needle was bent!  I can’t believe I didn’t even look at that, so that was a quick fix.  I got it all finished yesterday and quilted loopy loops in it.

Downy Quilts for Kids

I ordered a Quilts for Kids kit last weekend and got it in the mail today!

CIMG3901

CIMG3903

I think this is such a cool idea.  You can order your own quilt kit here.  I think their quilt label is so cute.  So I started working on the quilt tonight, got all the 4 patches sewn and sewed 2 rows together.  I’ll probably get it all done tomorrow.  Then will need to get it quilted.

After it’s all done, the label is on it, I wash it and pack it up to send back to the company.

L’amour Fabric – Jelly Roll

I ordered a Jelly Roll last weekend and it came today!  I am really excited about it and love the colors in the line.

Moda Lamour Valentine Ivory and Red Hearts

I think I am going to try to do this quilt Sampler.   The first block comes out March 1st.  I am not sure what I am going to do for the wide border or the sashing.  I really like the dark browns, maybe the brown with little red hearts as the wide border and maybe the solid red for the sashing.  The pattern calls for background fabric and I’m not really sure what that is used for, so will wait and see what the first one looks like before I order anything.

We had a Valentine’s Party at pre-school today.  I will try to post the pictures later.

New Block of the Month Quilt

I know, I have started too many projects, but I talked Barbara into doing this block of the month with me.  Burning the Midnight Oil's Fall Fancy

bom4

This is a little more complicated than I normally do, but I think I can do it!  Especially if Barbara is helping me.  Thanks, Barbara!

So step one is to make the 4 patch and 9 patch blocks.  I decided to do mine in lilac and light green.  Barbara is going to do reds, blues and tans.  We’re both using up the stash we have so we’re being resourceful!

Here’s my step 1 done:

Step1

I have to square the blocks up, but that won’t take too long.  Step 2 is already out, it’s the middle appliqué blocks.  Not really looking forward to that.

These steps come out the 15th of every month.  I think it will be fun.

Valentine’s Table Topper

I made a Valentine’s Topper yesterday.  It’s from Debbie Mumm’s Spice of Life free pattern.   I really like how it turned out.  I didn’t put a border around the edge, I don’t think I am going to do that.

Here’s the one that is on Debbie Mumm’s site

Christmas Candy Jar Quilt

I got the candy jar quilt done (well it’s not quilted yet) but it’s all pieced together.  I have to find backing for it, I want flannel and would be really happy if I could find some red Christmas Candy.  Another shopping trip!CIMG3565

I have 20 different Christmas candy fabrics in the quilt.  This is one of my favorites.

CIMG3567  And this one is!  I love the popcorn!  I really like the fabric for the lids too.  It was just one I had in my stash but it’s gray with flakes in it, like an old style galvanized lid.  CIMG3566

A UFO Completed #1

I have to complete 3 un-finished objects (a quilting term to you non- quilters – not an unidentified flying object).  It’s not like I really HAVE to do it, but Barbara and I are planning a trip soon and she thought we should finish 3 UFO’s before we go on the trip.  That way we feel better about buying more fabric to start a new project.  Well, not that we really need a reason to buy more fabric, right?

So I finally got this table runner done!

CIMG2923

My mom, Barbara and I all went to Paducah KY one year and I bought this Eleanor Burns pattern.  I started it that year, I don’t know when it was, maybe 2002?  Anyway, I finally finished it last year and decided I better get it quilted so I could get it off my list.  It’s probably the oldest project I have left to finish!  Woohoo.

CIMG2924

Here’s a few other pictures of quilts I have been working on.  This is a Moda Enchanted Holiday pattern.  I started quilting it and had trouble with the machine and just haven’t gone back to it.  So this will end up being my UFO #2.

 CIMG2930

I got the borders added on this It’s Snowing! Quilt.  Do you think it looks better with the borders?

CIMG2926

CIMG2674

Here’s one I’ve been working on for Mark.  I made it with 2 Charm Packs from Moda’s Northern Flight by Holly Taylor.  I bought some more fabric to add additional borders.   CIMG2925

So #3 will be quilting one of these 2 quilts I think.

Well, that’s it for tonight.

It’s Snowing! Quilt

I started this quilt last night and got it finished today.  I bought 3 sets of charm packs quite a while ago and found this pattern on the Moda Bake Shop site, so thought it would be a good quilt for these charm packs.  I really like how it turned out.

Do you think I should put an extra set of borders on this?  I could put the green, the blue or the red around it?  Course I would have to find some more fabric, but I think I can get more just by the quick search I did on the Internet.

Grandma's Attic by Moda

Here's another one that is almost done. It's Grandma's Attic. It took me a long time to get this one pieced together. I was really happy with it when I got done. But I have to tell on myself. Since it was last year that I started it, I had forgotten a lot of things. The first thing I did was the backing I indented to use on this quilt, I cut up and was going to use for another quilt when I realized that there was too much of it for the quilt I was going to use it for. So I realized it was for this one and decided I would go ahead and get this one quilted.

So I pinned it all on the machine and started looking at my To Do Board and saw it said "sew borders on Grandma's Attic quilt". I looked and the quilt and thought, no, that doesn't have borders does it? So I pulled my box out that I keep supplies for each one of my projects and sure enough, there was the borders all cut for this quilt. Darn it! So I unpinned it all and sewed the borders on. Then I put it back on the machine and realized I might not have enough batting.

I quilted it anyway and when I got to the end, I didn't have enough batting! So I just put a piece in there and cut both pieces so that I would get no gaps between the 2 pieces and finished it up.

Then I threaded the needle wrong and sewed a little bit with that. Those of you know what happened! I have a mess on the back of the quilt. So I'm going to take that out and try to fix it on the regular sewing machine, I think it will be ok.

Then I really want to put binding on it that matches the borders, but guess what? I don't have enough. I need 3/4 yard and have about 1/4. I looked all over the Internet for this fabric. It's Moda Cinnamon Stars line. I can't find the fabric anywhere. If anyone has some, let me know, I would be tickled to death to buy it from you!

So now, that I have explained all that, I bet you understand why I am glad to get this one done! It's definitely been an adventure.

The fabric I need is this brown with the little stars in it. I want the binding to match the borders. The borders stretched when I pinned it on the machine and I'm not real happy with how they turned out. That's a whole other story, but I think if the binding is the same as the border then it will be less noticeable.

Suduko Quilt Done

I am really getting stuff done the last couple of weeks, I finished the top of this Suduko quilt in March, 2008 and finally got it quilted and sewed the binding on it. Kasey was really excited to take all these quilt pictures and he had to be in all the pictures. What a ham!

Here is the back. If I had that iphone when I bought the Suduko backing, I would have known that I didn't buy enough of it! So I pieced some of the leftover fabric I had to make the backing work. My friend Barbara did that on a quilt she made for Kasey when he was born and it looked really great. I am pleased with how it turned out. I didn't plan anything on making the pieces match up to anything, I just sewed them all together. The orange squares ended up lining up together, but I didn't plan that.
